Almost every first conversation with a new student starts with "I think I am about intermediate, but I am not sure." That is normal. Here is what the levels mean in plain terms, and how we find yours.
The six levels
We use the CEFR scale, the European framework that most schools and exams share. A1 Beginner: you can introduce yourself and handle very simple phrases if the other person speaks slowly. A2 Elementary: you manage everyday situations such as shopping, directions and simple small talk. B1 Intermediate: you can hold a conversation about familiar topics, tell a story and cope while travelling, with some effort. B2 Upper intermediate: you follow a meeting or a film, argue a point and work in the language without constant strain. C1 Advanced: you use the language fluently in professional and academic settings and understand nuance. C2 Proficient: you understand practically everything and express yourself precisely, close to an educated native speaker.
Why self-assessment is hard
Most people judge their level by their weakest skill or their most embarrassing moment. Someone who reads well but freezes when speaking will call themselves a beginner. Someone who chats comfortably but writes with many mistakes will say "advanced". Both are partly right, which is why a test and a conversation together give a better picture than either alone.
How our placement test works
The test is free, online and takes about 15 minutes. It covers grammar, vocabulary and listening and places you on the A1 to C2 scale. There is nothing to prepare. Then, in your free 20-minute trial lesson, a tutor talks with you and confirms the level, because speaking is the part a written test cannot measure.
What if I am between levels?
That is common and not a problem. Your tutor plans lessons around what you can already do and what you need next, not around a label. In a small group course we place you with students at the same level so nobody is bored or lost.
Do I need to know my level to start?
No. Take the test, book the trial, and let the tutor do the placing. You can book both through the form on our home page or by asking the advisor on the website.
